Photography on Display: Artist in Residence Bob Saulnier

Tideview Terrace will be “Celebrating with Art”, the work of Bob Saulnier since he moved into his most recent home. Come enjoy his photography and see his perspective of the world through the eyes of someone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Biography of Robert (Bob) Saulnier

Born in Lower Concession, Nova Scotia in 1945 to the parents of Augusta and Herbert Saulnier. At age eleven, Bob lost his mother. Soon after he moved in with his future step mother, Rose Saulnier. Rose took in and cared for elderly people who were mentally and physically challenged. Bob grew up helping to take care of them. This eventually led him to leave home, age 17, moving to Halifax to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Bob took his training at the Nova Scotia Hospital in Dartmouth; he affiliated with the Victoria General, Children’s, and Soldier’s Hospitals.

Bob is married to his wife of 45 years Edna and has one son Blair of Halifax and two grandchildren Emily and Madison.

At age twelve, Bob developed an interest for photography using a tiny Kodak camera and he has the pictures to prove his young talent. It was only after Bob began working at the Digby General Hospital he obtained a Pentax K1000 where his amateur talents grew. When not at work or raising his son, he was off with his camera. Self taught; Bob had a natural gift or an artistic vision behind the camera. For years, he took numerous pictures of Digby and surrounding areas. One of his favourite most sold prints is of a sunrise at the Digby Cannon Banks.

Bob’s natural artistic talents evolved even further as seen with his Father Christmas carvings and tree ornaments. Bob loves Christmas.

In 1999 his health started to deteriorate; suffering a heart attack, having a triple bypass, and received the diagnosis of Alzheimer in 2005.

In 2012 Bob moved into Tideview Terrace (TVT), nursing home, Digby. The following year he decided to pick up photography to take his mind off his Alzheimer’s; also with the thought the pictures would be his memory of the neat quiet places of days spent. Bob has shared these photos with the people he lives with that are unable to get to the beach or to the outskirts of TVT. With his generosity, he has provided TVT with the photographs to use as fund raisers.

Bob is an inspiration to others including family members dealing with this disease and the people working with those that have the disease. Since 2013 he has taken over 50,000 pictures for others to enjoy.
